DUI defense law firm marketing

Marketing for DUI defense law firms

Most DUI clients have never needed a lawyer before. They search the morning after the arrest, worried about their license and their job, and they compare a few firms on cost and on how clearly each one explains what happens next.

The short answer

If you read one part of this page, read this.

DUI defense marketing works when a firm shows up the morning after an arrest, explains the license deadline and the court process in plain words, and replies before the person calls the next firm. Many DUI clients call more than one firm before they decide.

For most DUI firms we start with AI search and the Google Business Profile, add Local Services Ads in the US, and use Google search ads for searches like "first offense DUI lawyer". One DUI solo, a little over a year into practice, signed 9 new clients in a single month, $45,000 in revenue.

DUI fees tend to be predictable, so the math is cleaner than in many practices: you can see what a retained case costs and decide what to spend. We work with law firms across the US and Canada, and also in Australia and the UK.

How DUI clients choose

First-time clients, a short deadline and a price comparison.

Many DUI clients are working adults who have never been charged with anything. They worry about their license first and the court case second, and they shop around more than most people facing a criminal charge.

They search their own questions first

Searches like "do I need a lawyer for a first DUI", "will I lose my license" or "what happens at a DUI arraignment" often come before "DUI lawyer near me". The firm that answered those questions plainly is the one the person already trusts when they're ready to call.

The license clock starts at the arrest

In many states a DUI arrest starts a separate license process with its own short deadline. In Florida, a driver has 10 days from the notice of suspension to request a formal or informal review (section 322.2615, Florida Statutes). A firm that explains that deadline early earns trust quickly.

They compare cost

DUI callers often ask what it costs on the first call, then ring another firm to compare. A firm that explains how it charges and what's included keeps more of those callers than one that won't talk about money until the consultation.

They worry about who finds out

Employers, professional licensing boards and insurance come up early. Reviews that mention discretion and straight answers, and pages for commercial drivers or nurses with a DUI, speak to that fear directly.

Channels that fit

Which channels fit a DUI defense firm, and why.

We usually start with AI search and the Business Profile, which answer the research questions, then add the paid channels that catch the person in the days after the arrest.

AI search

People ask ChatGPT and Google's AI answers whether a first DUI needs a lawyer, how the license review works, and which local DUI lawyers have good reviews. Pages that answer those questions for your state, plus a well-reviewed Business Profile, give the tools something accurate to cite. Our guide on how to show up in ChatGPT covers what they read.

Local Services Ads

Google lists "DUI lawyer services" as its own US category, separate from "Criminal lawyer services", so a firm that takes both can show for each. You pay per lead, and ranking weighs your rating, number of reviews and response time. One solo who had tried SEO, pay-per-click, social media and bought leads generated $13,500 from $600 in ad spend on Local Services Ads within 12 days.

Google search ads

DUI searches are specific: "first offense DUI lawyer", "DUI license hearing", "underage DUI", each with a city. That suits search ads, as long as you block searches for checkpoints, DUI school and DUI classes, which bring clicks from people who don't need a lawyer. A landing page that states your state's license deadline gives the visitor a reason to call today.

Facebook and Instagram ads

Broad social ads rarely reach someone the week of an arrest. Showing ads to people who already read your DUI pages keeps your firm in view while they compare.

Narrowing to DUI only

A steady flow of DUI cases lets a lawyer drop the work he doesn't want. One DUI lawyer who used to take whatever came in now takes only DUI cases, nine months in, and has hit record months along the way.

Rules that shape it

Arrest lists, specialist claims and Canadian wording.

DUI firms can advertise to the public like anyone else. What changes is direct contact with people you know were just arrested, and how you describe your experience.

  • ABA Formal Opinion 501 (2022) says phoning people from a sheriff's list of recent arrests to offer legal services is prohibited solicitation under Model Rule 7.3(b), and that lawyers answer for staff and marketers who make those calls.
  • Comment [2] to ABA Model Rule 7.3 says letters and text messages are not live person-to-person contact. State rules on targeted mail to people who were arrested vary, so check yours before writing to anyone.
  • ABA Model Rule 7.2(c): calling yourself a "certified specialist" in DUI defense needs a certifier that is state-approved or ABA-accredited, named in the ad.
  • In Canada, impaired driving is a Criminal Code offense (section 320.14, "Operation while impaired"), and the Federation of Law Societies' Model Code bars advertising as a specialist without law society certification (rule 4.3-1). Canadian pages say impaired driving and lawyer.

So broad ads and pages about DUI law are fine, while anything aimed at a known arrestee needs a check against your state's rule first. This is a plain-language summary for marketing planning, not legal advice.

Intake

Where DUI firms lose cases after the inquiry arrives.

DUI leads are cost-aware and on a clock, so the usual leaks are slow replies, vague answers about fees, and an intake script that never mentions the license deadline.

  1. A slow first reply

Someone who filled out a form at 7 a.m. has often called another firm by 10. Reply within minutes by text and phone, and offer a consultation time in that first message.

  2. Dodging the fee question

When a caller asks about cost, a clear explanation of how you charge and what it covers keeps the conversation going. "We'll discuss that at the consultation" sends many of them to the next firm.

  3. No arrest date, no deadline

Intake should ask for the arrest date and the type of license, and the script should cover your state's review deadline. A caller who learns the clock is running books sooner, and the lawyer gets the file in time to act.

  4. No count of what converts

Track leads, consultations and retained clients each month. The DUI solo behind the $45,000 month converted at a 60%+ lead-to-retained rate, a number you can only manage once you measure it. Our guide to measuring law firm intake covers the rest.

FAQ

Questions DUI defense lawyers ask us.

Straight answers to the questions that come up most.

What should a DUI firm publish first?

Plain answers to the questions people ask the day after an arrest: whether a first DUI needs a lawyer, how the license review works in your state and by when, and what the court dates look like. Those pages feed AI answers and give search ads somewhere useful to land.

Should we put our DUI fees on the website?

That's your call, and any fee you publish falls under your state's advertising rules. Many DUI clients compare cost early, so at least explaining how you charge and what's included helps the page do its job.

Are Local Services Ads worth it for DUI?

Often, in the US. "DUI lawyer services" is a category of its own, you pay per lead, and the leads are people who searched for a DUI lawyer. They work with steady reviews and fast answering. Our Local Services Ads vs Google Ads guide compares the two.

Can we contact people from DUI arrest lists?

Not by phone or in person: ABA Formal Opinion 501 calls that prohibited solicitation, and it covers marketers calling for you. Letters and texts follow your state's rules on targeted mail, so check those first.

How much should a DUI firm spend on ads?

Start from what a retained DUI case is worth to you and work back to what you'd pay to sign one. Our guide on what law firm marketing costs shows typical monthly ad spend by platform. That money goes to Google or Meta on your own card.

Do you work with impaired driving lawyers in Canada?

Yes. Google doesn't list legal categories for Local Services Ads in Canada, so the plan rests on AI search, the Business Profile and Google search ads, written in the Criminal Code's impaired driving wording.
